20th century
Description
In the 20th century, Kollapur (now in Nagarkurnool district, Telangana) underwent major social, political, and administrative transformations — from being a feudal princely estate under the Nizam of Hyderabad to becoming part of democratic India.
? Early 20th Century (1900–1948)
Kollapur Samsthan under the Nizam of Hyderabad
Kollapur remained a semi-autonomous feudal estate (Samsthan) under the Hyderabad State, ruled by the Asaf Jahi dynasty.
It was administered by a hereditary Raja, who:
Collected taxes from villages
Maintained local law and order
Supported temples and schools
The Rajas of Kollapur lived in grand palaces and continued traditional patronage of Telugu culture, especially temple architecture and clical arts.
Key Features:
Large estates and zamindari system dominated rural life.
Education and modern infrastructure (roads, irrigation) slowly improved.
Local resistance to feudal oppression also began to rise.
⚔️ 1947–1948: Integration into India
In 1947, India gained independence, but the Nizam of Hyderabad refused to accede to India.
Kollapur was part of Hyderabad State, which remained independent under the Nizam until Operation Polo in September 1948, when the Indian Army annexed Hyderabad.
Kollapur was integrated into the Indian Union, and zamindari powers were abolished soon after.
?️ Post-1948 to Late 20th Century: Democratic Transition
Kollapur estate was dissolved under land reforms and the Abolition of Zamindari Act.
The former royal family lost political power but retained cultural influence.
The area became part of Mahbubnagar district in Andhra Pradesh (now in Telangana after 2014).
Government schools, roads, tanks, and panchayats were developed through the Five-Year Plans.
Political participation increased, and local leaders emerged in state politics.
? Social and Cultural Development
The 20th century saw:
Growth of Telugu-medium education
Continued temple traditions
Development of agriculture, especially cotton, paddy, and pulses
The Kollapur Palace and temples became cultural heritage sites.
