10th century

Description

In the 10th century CE, Kolhapur continued to grow as a political, religious, and cultural center in the western Deccan. This period saw significant dynastic transitions, temple activity, and the early emergence of Kolhapur as a distinct regional power.

? Political Developments in Kolhapur During the 10th Century:

1. Decline of the Rashtrakutas

  • The Rashtrakuta dynasty began to weaken in the late 10th century.

  • Their influence over Kolhapur declined, especially after the death of Krishna III (r. 939–967 CE), the last powerful Rashtrakuta ruler.

2. Rise of the Shilaharas of Kolhapur

  • Around 940–950 CE, the Shilahara dynasty of Kolhapur emerged as feudatories of the Rashtrakutas but later became semi-independent rulers.

  • Their capital was in or near Kolhapur.

  • The Shilaharas ruled the southern Konkan and western Maharashtra, including Kolhapur.

Notable Shilahara Rulers in the 10th Century:

  • Jatiga I (late 10th century)

  • Naḷla, his successor, likely ruled around the end of the 10th century

These rulers helped develop Kolhapur as a center of regional power.

? Religious and Cultural Developments:

1. Development of the Mahalakshmi Temple

  • The Mahalakshmi (Ambabai) Temple at Kolhapur gained prominence in this century.

  • It may have undergone renovation or expansion under Shilahara patronage.

  • The goddess Mahalakshmi became the chief deity of the city, leading to Kolhapur's religious significance across India.

2. Temple Construction and Endowments

  • Inscriptions mention land grants to temples, both Hindu and Jain.

  • The architecture of the time shows Chalukya-Rashtrakuta influence.

? Inscriptions and Language:

  • Inscriptions in Sanskrit and Kannada found in and around Kolhapur reveal temple donations, royal lineages, and administrative orders.

  • The use of Old Marathi begins to appear in some records by the late 10th century.
